Inside of the concentration camps during the Second World War, there were many stories of brutal guards and barbaric treatment. One of the most evil guards who worked inside of Buchenwald was Martin Sommer who was known as ‚The Hangman of Buchenwald.‘ He was even tried by the Nazis for being too violent and was later imprisoned for his role as a torturer, executioner and terrifying brute. Inside of Buchenwald, Sommer was in charge of extracting information and torturing prisoners and two people he targeted were two Austrian Priests. Otto Neururer and Matthais Spanlang had both been transported to Buchenwald from Dachau and had been imprisoned for speaking out against the Nazis. They were imprisoned and then were tortured further as it was alleged that they both performed banned ceremonies inside of the camp. But the pair were then executed in brutal scenes in a forest next to Buchenwald. The pair were allegedly crucified on a tree upside down by Martin Sommer, and Neururer succumbed to his execution 34 hours after he was initially tied to the tree. Spanlang also its believed was killed next to Neururer.
