Barbara Hofschröer ist britische Staatsbürgerin, die 1928 in London geboren wurde. Im Oktober 1948 heiratete sie einen deutschen Kriegsgefangenen namens Paul Hofschröer. Paul und Barbara wohnten bis 1986 in London, wo sie ihre beiden Söhne Robert und Peter erzogen. Als Rentnerpaar zogen sie nach York in Nordengland um, wo sie vorhatten ihre letzten Jahre in Frieden und Sicherheit in eigenem Haus zu verbringen. Robert, seine inzwischen verstorbenen Frau Shirley und ihre Kinder Diane und Martin wohnten in der Nähe. Peter arbeitete anfangs in Deutschland und anschließend in Österreich.
