For decades Stott Hall Farm has sat in between two carriageways of the M62, just West of Brighouse in Yorkshire. As motorists whiz past on their way through the Pennines many, no doubt, will have wondered how it became sandwiched between the busy roads in the first place. Thanks to a recently unearthed documentary from 1983, the mystery of the farm’s existence has now been revealed to a new audience. Farmer Ken Wild’s family had lived on the land since 1934 but when the motorway was proposed to snake through Yorkshire – and his farm – he refused to budge. However, as the programme Clegg’s People shows, it was a geological factor that stopped engineers from working through the site – rather than his stubbornness….
