Atgaa, 10, and her sister Reemya, 8, are about to be married to men in their 60s. Atgaa will be her husband’s fourth wife. Their wedding celebrations are scheduled for this week and will take place in the town of Fayaadah Abban in Qasim, Saudi Arabia.

The girls are getting married because their financially struggling father needs the money that their dowries will provide: young girls of this age can fetch as much as $40,000 each.

Many readers might be shocked at this news. How can it be legal? The answer is that Saudi Arabia has no minimum age for marriage, and it is perfectly legal to marry even an hour-old child.

Three Saudi ministries share the blame for allowing and facilitating child marriages. The health ministry is tasked with conducting genetic tests for couples considering marriage. Saudi law requires potential brides and grooms to provide certificates of genetic testing before marriages can officially proceed…. read more there!

Swedish Paper: WikiLeaks to Reveal Swedish Foreign Minister Bildt as US ‘Spy’

WikiLeaks aims to release documents exposing Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt as a US spy, as part of a campaign to stop Sweden from extraditing founder Julian Assange to the United States, according to a Swedish daily.

Saying it had seen the WikiLeaks documents Expressen reported on Wednesday that WikiLeaks has threatened in an internal memo to publish a diplomatic cable ‘where Sweden Foreign Minister Carl Bildt is shown to have been an informant for the United States since the 1970s.’

They report: “According to WikiLeaks, Bildt’s original contact is political consultant Karl Rove, a former adviser to President George W. Bush, and someone who Bildt has openly referred to as “an old friend”.”

Hours before being killed in the besieged Syrian city of Homs, Marie Colvin of the Sunday Times of London filed a story on the death of a two-year-old child from shrapnel wounds as his family watched, wailed, wept. Colvin was in the room; the camera stayed on the child as he struggled for breath. This is Assad’s reality, she said: He is “shelling a city of cold, starving civilians.” Colvin bravely made it her own, too. Also killed was award-winning French photojournalist Rémi Ochlik, 28, and at least 80 Syrians. Video from Colvin’s story. Warning: Video is very graphic.

These are twenty-eight thousand civilians, men, women and children, hiding, being shelled, defenseless. That little baby is one of two children who died today, one of the children being injured every day. That baby probably will move more people to think, “What is going on, and why is no one stopping this murder in Homs that is happening every day?”

The film examines the execution of Cameron Todd Willingham in Texas for the murder of his children by arson and centers around evolving standards of scientific evidence and the notion that an innocent man was executed.
